Welcome to Classic Restorations
With the team of sixteen time-served craftsmen, Classic Restorations operate within a former linen works in the historic village of Alyth in Perthshire. Here more than 6000 square feet are given over to the bodywork, trimming, paint and engineering workshops, with a further 7,000 square feet of adjoining buildings - some dehumidified - provide secure and generous storage facilities for client cars. A recent addition is a fully equipped, purpose built paint shop catering for historic and modern celluloses.
"So far as we know, no-one else in Scotland provides a wider range of services than ourselves or does such a variety of work," said Charles. "We can offer a complete range of service, from routine maintenance to a complete restoration. We also offer a free inspection and report on all models."
"It is an ambition of mine to see most, if not all Scottish classics cars restored in Scotland. We have the ability to do this here. I am not suggesting of course that all Scottish restoration work should be carried out by ourselves. But owners should perhaps look at talent and expertise on the own doorstep before sending cars hundreds of miles away for work that could at least, be carried out as well at home and probably at a lower cost."
Mechanical work is carried out in scrupulously clean specialist workshops, equipped for white metalling work together with engine block and line boring to an extremely high standard, matching the skills of the neighbouring body shop. This is geared to produce obsolete body panels in steel or aluminium, create new wings, riveted bonnets and louvered panels to pattern or from drawings. Ash-frame restoration or complete reconstruction is another complementary skill.
"Many people have tried to undertake this type of operation using semi-skilled or unskilled labour supervised by one experienced man, " said Charles. "Quite simply it doesn't work. It requires a skilled pair of hands coupled with a degree of maturity to appreciate the importance of getting every last detail correct"
Charles also offers to accompany would-be classic owners on hunts for uncovered treasures and future restoration projects. A professional pre-purchase inspection of a would-be restoration project can save a lot of money and an enormous amount of heartache.
